e-nnovate goes open source

We are currently preparing a dual-license release with GPL for non-commercial and our own for commercial use -- we are still working on the details.

I have reworked the site and reinstituted the demo account for trying e-nnovate out. I also made e-nnovate express available for download and free personal (non commercial) use.

I will have some demo accounts up soon... so stay tuned.

Holiday Letter [from Dec 07]

Happy Holidays,

I will be looking back at this year with mixed feelings. On the one side we had tremendous success – we signed up several customers, were among the finalists for UCSD’s business plan contest, and had an actual class using e-nnovate’s product successful. On the other hand we didn’t meet our financial targets – and this led to some refocusing in the team and the following (important) announcement.

Let’s talk about the tremendous team who supported this venture during the last four year: Jared, our user representative, is gearing up to pursue a post doctoral entrepreneurial program in medical devices at Stanford university. While working at e-nnovate he also earned a PhD in Bioengineering from UCSD. Congrats!! Nick, who was instrumental in getting us going, has since helped several other start-ups and is now looking to become a radiologist (he just finished his MD/PhD program). [...] Joy will be finishing her MBA at Stanford this year and pursue a career in process consulting. This tells you about the quality of our team and how fortunate I was to work with them. I think, I am talking for all of us, when I say, that we learned a lot from you, our users, and this essentially got us where we are.

The variety of things I am doing would warrant another e-mail – so I will focus on my consulting company Eichberger Services because this will be most relevant for this letter: I have grown Eichberger Services in the last year tremendously and performed IT Strategy projects in Australia and the US. Furthermore the e-nnovate software is now fully integrated into Eichberger Services.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
Eichberger Services will retire the e-nnovate service at www.e-nnovate.com on 1/16. Customers are advised to back up there notes via the backup function in Settings->Backup or make alternate arrangements by contacting info@e-nnovate.com Eichberger Services will retain an encrypted backup of the complete database and will be able to extract certain lab notebooks for a fee after ownership is verified.
Eichberger Services will contact customers of the Virtual Lab Server in January 2008.
Eichberger Services will continue its world class support for customers of stand-alone lab server installations and provide updates and fixes.

I am making this announcement as I said with mixed feelings – on the one hand the e-nnovate product will not any more have the attention I think it deserves -- on the other hand I am excited about the teams new opportunities and of course the tremendous growth ahead for Eichberger Services –

Thanks for being our customers –
Happy Holidays,

German Eichberger, CEO Eichberger Services

UCSD Computer Science Lab using our labnotebook...

ApacheCon 07

I had the pleasure to attend this years ApacheCon in Atlanta. It was an awesome conference and I got to learn about the new technologies (like REST, Atom, etc.) from the people at frontline.

We haven't for instance Atom support or Facebook integration because of security concerns. We want to make sure your data is safe and not somehow unencrypted piped into some Web 2.0 site. Anyhow with the banking industry discovering Atom there might be soon a standard which will support our high security standards.

Feel free to comment and let us know what features you would like to see in one of our upcoming releases...
